Obtaining a License

In order to work and prescribe in Hawaii, you need several things: a license, an oral code, a NED code and a DEA code. The last two items are only if you are going to prescribe narcotics.
You need a job to finish getting all of these but you can start the process. You will need a supervising physician to sign some documents before you are issued a license and the other numbers.

Obviously you need to be NCCPA certified. You can apply for a temporary license as long as you have a date for which you will sit for the NCCPA exam.

For license, contact Professional and Vocational Licensing Division, Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, 1010 Richards Street, P.O. Box 3469, Honolulu, HI 96801, (808) 586-3000 for application and instructions.

For the NED number and oral code, contact State Department of Public Safety, Narcotics Enforcement Division, 3375 Koapaka st. #D100, Honolulu, HI 96819, (808) 837-8470; Fax: (808) 837-8474. Ask for the oral code application and the application for registration under Uniform Controlled Substances Act. The final step is to register your federal DEA number with the Narcotics Enforcement Division at the above address.

For a DEA number, contact, 1-800-882-9539. You will need the DEA before you can apply for the NED number. If you have a DEA number already, you must call the 800 number to get it transferred to Hawaii.
